A Russian nationalist by the name of Imran Zakhaev is determined to return his homeland to the Soviet times. Zakhaev knows the United States of America would never allow this to happen, thus he funds a coup in the Middle East, organized by his ally Khaled Al-Asad, to draw attention away from Russia. In the Prologue levels, "Soap" MacTavish meets the basic characters, completes a small tutorial, and attacks a cargo ship alongside Captain Price and Gaz, who are almost killed when a MiG sinks the ship. In the Middle East, President Al-Fulani of an unknown Arab country is executed by Al-Asad. In Act 1, MacTavish rescues a Russian informant code-named "Nikolai" (though his helicopter is shot down, and he is supported by an AC-130). Meanwhile, in the Middle East, Sergeant Paul Jackson, Lieutenant Vasquez and Staff Sergeant Griggs fight their way to the capital city of the country Al-Fulani was executed in. They first attack a broadcasting station where they see Al-Asad broadcasting, but it turns out to be a recording. Then they rescue a stranded Abrams tank called War Pig. Then they attack the capital city. However, a nuke explodes, killing Jackson and Vasquez. Griggs is not present during the detonation. In Act 2, MacTavish is tasked with finding and capturing Al-Asad. However, when it is found out that Zakhaev is supplying Al-Asad, Al-Asad is executed by Price. There is then a flashback mission where Captain MacMillan, a sniper team leader, and then-Leftenant Price are sent in to the first assassination mission issued by the British government since World War II. Their target, Zakhaev, then a rich Ultranationalist, is shot, but only his arm is lost. Back in the present, the squad evacuates the town on the Chinook "Big Bird", which has Griggs on it. Then, Soap and his SAS team, Griggs' Marine squad and Sgt.Kamarov's Russian Loyalists attempt to capture Victor Zakhaev, Zakhaev's son for information. However, just when the the strike force corners Zakhaev's son, he commits suicide by shooting himself in the head to avoid capture. In Act 3, MacTavish and his SAS squad, joined by an American sniper team and an American Marine squad, attempt to retake a launch facility recently captured by the Ultranationalists because Price knew Zakhaev was outraged by the death of his son and threatens to launch ICBMs at the US. They first rescue Griggs after he misses they landing zone. Then, they knockout the power to the ICBM facility so the Marines can breach the perimeter. Then they meet with the American sniper team, but two ICBMs are launched at the US Eastern Seaboard, which could cause 40 million casualties. They enter the facility and after retaking the facility and aborting the launch, MacTavish, Gaz, Price, Griggs, and some other squad members escape in Russian cars. Ultranationalists pursue them and an Ultranationalist helicopter damages a bridge and the men crash on, stranding the men without support. After a tanker explodes, all of the men are wounded, except Griggs, and Zakhaev comes to the bridge to observe. Griggs is shot in the head while trying to drag MacTavish to safety and Gaz is executed by Zakhaev. When Zakhaev is on the vergue of killing Soap, a Loyalist Mi-28 destroys the Hind and distractes Zakhaev long enough for Price to toss MacTavish an M1911, which MacTavish uses to kill Zakhaev and his men. Russian Loyalists come to aid the men, evacuating MacTavish and attempting to revive Price, who appears to be dead when the medic attempting to resuscitate him becomes frustrated. A television news report is played, mentioning the events of the game. But the newscaster dismisses this as "leadership struggles" and "nuclear missile testing", stating that the six days that passed was now known by the public.
Jackson and other Marines are sent to the capital city of the unnamed Middle Eastern country where Khaled Al Asad has taken over. In the search for Al Asad they search two buildings, the first a normal house and the second a TV station, in which a heavy fight occurs. Both buildings show no sign of Al Asad however. After receiving word that a general combat tank, "War Pig," has become isolated, Jackson and his platoon are given orders to rescue it and get it running again. The platoon proceeds to save the tank and move it through the terrorist-held city. He then fights through the mission Shock and Awe to rescue a team of Marines pinned down in a building and gets them to the helicopter. Moments later, he rescued the pilot of a Cobra helicopter crash only for his own helicopter to be caught in a nuclear detonation shortly after. Paul Jackson initially survives the nuclear explosion, but eventually dies of radiation poisoning and/or injuries sustained in the crash (it is never stated which) as he struggles to crawl out of his helicopter.
Paul Jackson
Paul Jackson was a special-forces operator of the United States Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance, 1st Force Recon, and was a main character of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
Vasquez
Lieutenant Vasquez is in charge of Sergeant Paul Jackson's squad during the American only missions in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. He is easily recognized because he wears a helmet lacking a desert camouflage cover, several tally signs, and the number 28. He carries more equipment than the other Marines. He always uses an M16A4 with an M203 grenade launcher attachment. He is also always carrying a Mossberg 500 Cruiser shotgun on his back though he never uses it and it is never available to the player. He is killed in the nuclear explosion while evacuating in a transport helicopter in the mission Shock and Awe. His corpse can be found during Aftermath. Like all storyline-critical NPCs, Vasquez cannot be killed during normal gameplay, regardless of what injuries he takes. He is voiced by David Sobolov.
Griggs
'Sgt. Griggs' is a major character in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. He is a Staff Sergeant of the United States Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance and initially under the command of Lt. Vasquez. Griggs served throughout the Middle Eastern Theater with distinction alongside Lt. Vasquez's squad. He avoided death in the nuclear blast which destroyed the city. From the information released he is believed to be the only survivor of Vasquez's and Jackson's platoon. After the detonation, he joined Cpt. Price's field team alongside Gaz and John 'Soap' MacTavish in their mission to find Zakhaev and resolve the nuclear threat. During the team's evacuation attempt, however, a fuel tanker is detonated on a collapsing bridge, incapacitating most of the SAS/Marine strike force. Griggs was shot in the face and killed by Ultranationalist forces while dragging Soap to safety. He was voiced by Infinity Ward designer Mark Grigsby, and his physical appearance is modeled after Grigsby. His behaviour in-game is a mix of casual and cameo; carrying CDs of rap music while fighting against Al-Asad's forces and often brandishing a Light Machine Gun in a sleeveless top.
Pelayo
Captain "Deadly" Pelayo was a AH-1W Super Cobra pilot in the United States Marine Corps Aviation. She is first heard in the level, Charlie Don't Surf while your Blackhawk Helicopter is traveling to the coast. She is also seen in the level Shock and Awe where she is to cover the Outlaw 2-5 and the ground forces advancing on the city. She is shot down by a rocket launcher right when the nuclear device is said to be probable by the NEST team. She is rescued by Sergeant Jackson but is killed by the nuclear bomb force pulling her out of the Sea Knight. Sometimes, she can be seen on the ground next to the crash site. Pelayo is the highest ranking USMC officer seen in the field, with the rank of Captain. Pelayo is also the only woman found in the entire game. Pelayo is voiced by and modeled after Infinity Ward employee Velinda Pelayo
Roycewicz
Private Roycewicz was a US Marine under the command of Lieutenant Vasquez. During the attack on Al-Asad's capital city, Roycewicz and Paul Jackson were ordered by Vasquez to sweep and clear the second floor of a building they assaulted. While going up the stairs, Roycewicz was attacked by a particularly burly soldier, who knocked him down and shoots him. Jackson can choose to save him or watch him be killed. Roycewicz is also one of the randomly generated names for the Marine NPCs. It is possible to see him during Charlie Don't Surf, and also during War Pig regardless of the player's decision. Roycewicz was named after a member of Call of Duty 4's development team named Alexander Roycewicz.
Massey
Private Massey is one of the soldiers assigned to Lieutenant Vasquez's unit, and serves as the breaching specialist. Massey assisted Vasquez and Sergeant Paul Jackson in clearing the OpFor HQ building that was allegedly the location of Khaled Al-Asad. Massey is easily identifiable, as he carries a shotgun on his back, much like Lieutenant Vasquez.
Kilo Four Foxtrot
Sniper Team Two (Kilo Four Foxtrot) was an American Marine Sniper Team comprising of CW4. Smith and Sgt. Skully, they emerge from the grassline and meet with Cpt. Price, SSgt. Griggs, Soap, Gaz and the rest of the SAS team near the end of the mission "Ultimatum". They tell him a way to get into the nuclear launch facility right before two nuclear ICBMs launch, heading for the Eastern Sea Board of the United States. In the mission "All In", they cover the SAS force while they attack the launch facility. They will often shoot targets right infront of you and say "This is Team 2, target down." Their fate is unknown, but as they did not enter the Missile Silo, they may have been able to avoid the Ultranationist Forces chasing the escaping SAS & Marines.
In the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Price held the rank of Captain and led a four-man SAS squad from the Bering Strait to Russia to Azerbaijan and finally back to Russia. Under his command throughout the events were Gaz and Sgt. "Soap" MacTavish. Price often carried a modified M4A1 and wore a boonie hat during field operations. Fifteen years previous to the events of Call of Duty 4, Price held the rank of Lieutenant in the Special Air Service, and was under the command of Captain MacMillan in a covert operation to assassinate Imran Zakhaev near Chernobyl, Ukraine. While Price was believed to have killed Zakhaev with an M82, Zakhaev survived with a severed arm. Eventually, at the conclusion of Call of Duty 4, Price appears to be killed by Zakhaev's men during the SAS infiltration of a Russian nuclear missile silo. However, though heavily wounded, Price manages to slide an M1911 to MacTavish, who kills Zakhaev and end the six-day global conflict. After that, he is seen getting chest compressions from a Russian medic. Captain Price is voiced by Billy Murray. Nickname Bravo Six
Gaz
Gaz is a British Special Air Service veteran operator featured in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Known for his wry sense of humor, he was part of a SAS field operations team led by Captain Price, along with Soap MacTavish, the main character of Call of Duty 4. He is one of the few characters that isn't called by their rank, just their name. He assisted the player on most missions. He gives Soap a run through on how to use guns in F.N.G. He assists Soap in retrieving code-name Nikolai an Ultranationalist informant, during which he threatens Sgt.Kamarov of the loyalist forces into telling him where he is. After that he is shot down in his helicopter with Soap, Nikolai and Cpt.Price. They escape and head to Azerbaijan to capture Al-Asad. They succeed but Cpt.Price shoots Al Asad in the head after Imran Zakhaev rings Al Asads phone. After hearing about Cpt. Price's assassination attempt on Zakhaev 15 years ago, they escape Azerbaijan and go to capture Zakhaev's son. This fails as Zakhaev's son shoots himself when he is surrounded. They head to secure a nuclear missile sites from Zakhaev's men. As they get through and cut the power for a sniper team 2 missiles are launched. They cut the vents at which point Gaz was sent to the security room with American forces whilst Price, Soap and Griggs went to the main room to input the codes to stop the warheads. The jeep he was escaping in skidded to a halt to avoid going over the edge of a destroyed bridge, and he fought with the rest whilst waiting for evac. However, a tanker exploded, injuring him and he was shot by Imran Zakhaev as he lay on the floor in the level "Game Over". He was voiced by Craig Fairbrass. Nickname Bravo Five
Soap Mactavish
Sergeant "Soap" MacTavish, is one of the characters in the game, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. He plays a major role during the Ultranationalist Crisis, a newcomer to the SAS and part of Captain Price's Bravo Team. Soap is one of the characters the player will assume the role of, and is the primary protagonist. His life is unknown after the events of CoD 4.
Soap" begins his SAS Career hours before the six-day global conflict begins. He starts out as a Sergeant, unusual in that newcomers to the SAS are demoted to Trooper so that they must learn from the ground up. He is given a quick training session in weapons and techniques by Gaz, before being introduced to Captain Price and the rest of Bravo Team. Passing the Close-Quarter-Battle test (intended to be reminiscent of the real SAS "Killing Houses") he is placed on the team and briefed on the mission, to infiltrate and assault a Cargo Ship in the Bering Straight. On board the ship, they discover a nuclear bomb bound for Russia, though enemy MIGs interrupt their investigations, and Soap is just lucky enough to escape with his life, being forced to leap for the ramp of their helicopter just as it begins flying away which causes him to lose his grip just to be rescued at the last second by Price. Upon completing the mission, Soap, Captain Price and Gaz move into Russia to extract the informant who supplied them with the intelligence for the Cargoship, a man codenamed Nikolai. Working in close conjunction with Russian Government Loyalists led by Sergeant Kamarov, they successfully extract Nikolai, though their helicopter is shot down by Ultranationalist anti-aircraft missile fire. Bravo Team, Nikolai and another SAS Operator are forced to fight their way through enemy lines, before being provided with support from an AC-130 Spectre Gunship, callsigned "Wildfire". They are extracted by helicopter under cover of heavy air support from Wildfire. Soap's next mission would take him to Azerbaijan, with Bravo Team. Clearing through an abandoned village, Soap was witness to Khaled Al-Asad's execution by Captain Price. The next day, it appears Soap was designated the Team's support man, being equipped with both an M249 and M21 sniper rifle. He was placed in charge of covering the team's retreat with the Minigun from a downed Black Hawk (destroying several Ultranationalist Helicopters in the process) and detonating the explosive charges placed at Phase Lines Bravo and Alpha. MacTavish's final mission (that we know of) saw him infiltrating Russia as part of the joint task force of US Marines and SAS Operators in order to eliminate Imran Zakhaev's nuclear capability. He was in charge of destroying the electricity supply to the facility, and then, during the escape, provided all-around covering fire for their jeep as they made their way to the extraction site. Fighting fiercely at the bridge during the penultimate battle, he was thrown to the floor and severely injured by an exploding tanker. He was pulled into cover by Staff-Sergeant Griggs, moments before Griggs was killed, and was then witness to Gaz' execution at the hands of Imram Zakhaev. A heavely wounded Captain Price passed Soap his sidearm, and Soap personally killed Imram Zakhaev and two of his bodyguards, before blacking out, while being given medical attention by Sergeant Kamarov. (though as the Russian Loyalists arrive, your only objective of surviving the escape is fulfilled)
Soap has short blond hair, has blue eyes, is white, is about 5'8", and is in his twenties. Soap has Scottish parents, but was born and raised in England. In the F.N.G. training mission, Soap wears the Crew Expendable and Mile High Club clothing and armour, but doesn't wear a gasmask or hood. In the Crew Expendable mission, Soap wears a helmet and gasmask. In the other missions of the game, Soap wears the same clothing as Price and Gaz, but wears the same hat as Price. In the opening video for Modern Warfare, in one scene, you see a clip from the Victor Zakhaev chase. Behind Victor Zakhaev, you quickly see Soap running at him. If you have good eye coordination, you'll see that Soap is definately white, and he wears a Russian beanie hat as part of his Ultranationalist disguise. Nickname Soap
Arem
Sergeant Arem was a British SAS soldier to assist in the fight for Al-Asad's safehouse. Arem worked with Captain Price, Gaz, Mac, and Sergeant "Soap" MacTavish to secure the town. Arem is easily identifiable by the winter cap he always has on.
Nikolai
Nikolai is a British informant amongst Imran Zakhaev's ultranationalists, and ally of the SAS in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. In the Blackout mission, the SAS team under Captain Price must find and rescue him before the ultranationalists can kill him. He was informing the British from the ultranationlist camp untill his cover was blown. In Hunted, the Black Hawk he and the team were aboard is shot down before they've left the area, and he is forced to fight alongside the team with no gear except the AK74u he was found with. Finally, under cover of Spectre fire, he is evacuated by a second helicopter airlift to a safe house in Hamburg, and his last mention in the game is a loading cutscene in which he sends the SAS the coordinates to a safehouse in Azerbaijan.
Mac
'Mac' is a soldier in the SAS. Like Gaz, his name just appears as 'Mac' with no rank visible. He can be seen on the training mission to the left of the warehouse as you walk out of shooting range, on the obstacle course. He, along with Soap, Gaz, and Price are tasked with fending off forces at Al'Asad's Safehouse in Heat before evacuation arrives. His fate is unknown. He was voiced by Gideon Emery.
Maxwell
Maxwell was a member of the Special Air Service during Call of Duty 4. He was part of the team that went to rescue Nikolai from the clutches of Nationalist soldiers. He aids the rest of his team in escaping aftert heir chopper is shot down and they are faced to make their way through the Russian countryside. Strangely Maxwell is sometimes a Corporal and on other occasions a Sergeant. And on other occassions he is replaced by Corporal Murphy
MacMillan
MacMillan was a Scottish Special Air Service officer featured in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Fifteen years prior to the modern events of Call of Duty 4, he was a captain of the SAS and the commander of a two-man SAS sniper team, including then-Lieutenant (pronounced "Leftenant" in the British Armed Forces) Price, that was assigned to assassinate Imran Zakhaev in a covert operation in Pripyat, Ukraine. After Price successfully injured Zakhaev, MacMillan and the "Leftenant" were compromised and forced to flee. MacMillan's leg was injured, and Price had to carry him the rest of the way to safety. The player controls Price during "One Shot, One Kill" and "All Ghillied Up". However, the player cannot finish the mission without carrying Captain MacMillan to safety in "One Shot, One kill". Captain MacMillan is also famous for his thick Scottish accent. During the mission "One Shot, One Kill", MacMillan instructs you on how to snipe Imran Zakhaev. His famous line is as follows, "I think you blew his arm off. Shock and blood loss should do the rest." MacMillan to Lieutenant Price, upon the latter shooting Imran Zakhaev Captain MacMillan is voiced by actor Zach Hanks.
Kamarov
MacMillan was a Scottish Special Air Service officer featured in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Fifteen years prior to the modern events of Call of Duty 4, he was a captain of the SAS and the commander of a two-man SAS sniper team, including then-Lieutenant (pronounced "Leftenant" in the British Armed Forces) Price, that was assigned to assassinate Imran Zakhaev in a covert operation in Pripyat, Ukraine. The Center of Special Operations (CNS) of the FSB is designed to combat terrorism and to protect the constitutional order in the Russian Federation. The CSN FSB consists of 3 different "operative" subdivisions - Department A (also known as spetsgruppa "Alfa"), Department V (also known as spetsgruppa "Vympel"), and so-called SSO (Special Operations Service). The headquarters of CSN FSB is a huge complex of buildings and training areas (dozens of hectares worth of land, 76 training facilities, etc). It is located in the town of Balashikha-2, only 10 km away from the Moscow ring. The average training of a solid CSN operative lasts about 5 years. "Alfa" is a well-known counter-terrorist unit begun in 1974. Today "Alfa" is a highly professional unit, which consists of roughly 700 servicemen. The majority of the unit is stationed at Moscow, the rest of the unit is located in three other cities - Krasnodar, Yekaterinburg, and Khabarovsk. All the "Alfa" operatives undergo special airborne and firearms training. Roughly one third of them have special mountain training; another third have special counter-sabotage diving training. Spetsnaz operatives always improve on their skills in countless exercises and special operations (including constant service in North Caucasus). The unit utilizes a wide range of modern Russian and foreign weapons and equipment, some modified from the original versions to fit the unique needs of the unit. "Vympel" (the Pennant) formerly known as an elite cold war-era KGB sabotage unit is now also a counter-terrorist and counter-sabotage unit. But, unlike "Alfa", instead of learning how to storm airplanes and buses, they operate in an entirely different environment. They are experts in 18 special disciplines (among which - how to infiltrate guarded buildings, extensive marksmanship training, driving APCs and airplanes, and medical training) and are Russia's last defense against possible terrorist acts involving nuclear plants, hydroelectric dams, and other industrial complexes. However, "Vympel" operatives are still heavily used in special operations missions in the Northern Caucasus, along with their counterparts from "Alfa" unit. "Vympel" has 4 operative units, "Alfa" has 5 operative units. One unit from each Department is always participating in offensive operations in Chechnya. They constantly rotate their troops, and each operative unit is stationed in Chechnya at least 2-3 times per year. "Vympel" is stationed in Moscow, but it also has multiple branch offices in virtually every city where there is a nuclear power plant. Department A and V operatives' standard BDU color is black. However, in Chechnya they use different kinds of camouflage. Special Operations Service - Not much information about SOS can be obtained, but it is known that they also participate in FSB special operations in the Northern Caucasus and also act as highly skilled bodyguards for government officials. Together with Center of Special Operations and its elite units, there are many FSB special forces units of regional significance. Such operative detachments are usually called ROSN (Regional Department of Special Designation). The most powerful ROSNs are said to be at Saint Petersburg (ROSN "Grad") and Nizhny Novgorod
Zakhaev
Fifteen years before the civil war in Russia, Zakhaev was nothing more than an arms dealer who saw the collapse of the communist regime in the Soviet Union as an opportunity to salvage radioactive fuel rods from the Chernobyl nuclear powerplant in Prypjat, Ukraine, and sell the precious uranium as nuclear material in the black markets. His criminal activities were notified by the British intelligence, and the Special Air Service gained its first assassination order since the ending of World War II. The SAS dispatched two operatives, Captain MacMillan and then-Lieutenant Price, as snipers in Ukraine to eliminate Zakhaev. Pripyat, an abandoned ghost town since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, and the peaceful countryside surrounding the city were swarming with Russian mercenaries employed by Zakhaev, but MacMillan and Price, wearing protective ghillie suits, were able to sneak to the city unnoticed by the soldiers. Sniping from over 800 meters with his Barrett M82 sniper rifle, Price aimed and shot Zakhaev in the left shoulder, when his target was meeting his business partners near to the Chernobyl powerplant. The Russians attempted to elimate the intruders, but MacMillan and Price were able to escape the city. MacMillan thought Zakhaev would die from shock and blood loss, but this would not be the case. Zakhaev survived, but the failed assassination attempt cost his left arm. Fifteen years later, Zakhaev became the chairman of the Russian Ultranationalist party. In his opinion, the current Russian government had "prostituted" his beloved homeland with the west, ruining the economy and culture of the country in the process. Harbouring a strong and keen hatred of Western countries, Zakhaev seeked to return Russia to its "prime", possibly seeking to return it to its condition before the Soviet Union collapsed, though with himself in power. To topple the Russian current government, Zakhaev took the next step in his plan and the Ultranationalist party waged a political crisis that escalated into civil war in Russia. The Ultranationalist troops were supported by old Soviet-era vehicles, including BM-21 rocket artilleries, BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles and Mi-24 helicopter gunships, and the field commander of the Ultranationalist forces was Zakhaev's son, Victor Zakhaev. The Russian civil war became critical to world peace as it became clear that if the Ultranationalists would win, Zakhaev would have unlimited access to the entire Russian nuclear weapons arsenal, including over 15,000 active nuclear warheads. However, his plan to overthrow the government met heavy resistance from the Russian military units, loyal to the current Russian government. Zakhaev understood his plan would never work, because the civil war could draw the attention of the United States and United Kingdom, both of whom supported the current Russian government. However, Zakhaev had an influential political ally in an unnamed country in the Arabian Peninsula, a military commander named Khaled Al-Asad. Zakhaev contacted Al-Asad, and funded and masterminded a military coup in which President Yasir Al-Fulani was overthrown by the soldiers loyal to Al-Asad. Zakhaev and his son took part in the coup in the Arabian Peninsula; V. Zakhaev was in the car that transported President Al-Fulani to the arena where he was executed, and Zakhaev himself witnessed Al-Fulani's execution.[4] In fact, it was Zakhaev who gave Al-Asad the same pistol that was used to execute Al-Fulani on national television. Al-Asad assumed control of his homeland, causing political instability in the Middle East and forcing the United States Marine Corps to invade the country, and the capital city of Al-Asad's homeland was soon under attack by the US forces. However, Al-Asad's soldiers detonated a Russian-made nuclear bomb, leveling the city and wiping out the invading enemy force. Before the detonation, Al-Asad had already taken refuge in Azerbaijan, where he was protected by Zakhaev's Ultranationalist forces. However, the SAS operatives led by Captain Price captured and interrogated Al-Asad, executing him shortly afterwards. The evidence gathered by the SAS revealed that Zakhaev had provided for Al-Asad the nuclear weapon detonated in the Arabian Peninsula, and that he was the mastermind responsible for everything in the Middle East. When the United Kingdom and United States understood Zakhaev had planned to divert the attention of both countries from the Russian civil war, the Special Air Service and United States Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance were ordered to locate and capture Victor Zakhaev, in order to persuade him to reveal the location of his father. However, the operation failed when Zakhaev's son committed suicide to prevent his capture. Angered by the death of his son, Zakhaev demanded all US and British forces to leave Russia immediately or "suffer the consequences" by launching ICBMs from the missile silo captured by the Ultranationalist forces, but the SAS and Force Reconnaissance operatives were dispatched to Central Russia to deactivate the nuclear warheads in the silo. Zakhaev launched two RT-2UTTH Topol-M ballistic missiles to the eight largest cities in the East Coast of the United States: Boston, Hartford, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Richmond and Norfolk. Since the missiles carried multiple independent nuclear warheads, it was estimated that the nuclear holocaust on the US soil would kill over 41 million US citizens. However, the SAS and Force Reconnaissance operatives were able to secure the silo and deactivate all nuclear warheads in the missiles.[10] The SAS and Force Reconnaissance operatives then attempted to flee from the silo, but the bridge that was crucial to their escape was destroyed by an Ultranationalist Mi-24 helicopter gunship. During the fire fight on the bridge, Staff Sergeant Griggs of the Force Reconnaissance was killed by the Ultranationalista while attempting to save a comrade, and Zakhaev and his bodyguards arrived to the scene. Zakhaev executed SAS operative Gaz and his bodyguards shot two other SAS commandos, and he moved to kill Captain Price and Sergeant John "Soap" MacTavish. Suddenly, Zakhaev and his bodyguards were distracted by the explosion of the Mi-24 helicopter, caused by a loyalist Mi-28 attack helicopter and the arrival of Sergeant Kamarov's troops. Captain Price used this opportunity to slide his handgun to Soap, and when Zakhaev turned back to look at the SAS operatives, he and his bodyguards were shot down by Soap. After Zakhaev's death, it is presumed the Ultranationalist party had begun having leadership struggles.
Victor
Victor is present in the unnamed Middle-Eastern country during the execution of President Al-Fulani, riding along with him in the car that delivers him to the presidential palace and his eventual death, directing the driver and holding his favorite weapon; a Mini Uzi. After the death of Al-Asad at the hands of Cpt. Price, Imran Zakhaev goes into hiding. Despite this, his son continues to directly lead the Ultranationalist forces in Russia. He becomes the subject of a manhunt and eventual pursuit by a combined Loyalist/S.A.S/U.S.M.C task force during the level "Sins of the Father". He is chased through an abandoned town in Russia and soon cornered in a five-story building. However even when he can't escape he moves at the final floor of the building. The S.A.S. and the U.S. forces block him. He doesn't surrender even when he is told to put down the weapon. When S.A.S operative "Soap" MacTavish moves to take his weapon, Victor commits suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. It is possible to take Vicotr's M1911 in which he kills himself with as a trophy. Victor's death deeply affects Imran, who takes over an ICBM Missile Silo in the Altay Mountains and launches two ICBMs at the United States' East Coast in retaliation. He also laments in an ultimatum to British and U.S forces that "Our blood has been spilled on our Soil. My blood... on their hands... They are the invaders..., in a Trembling, Angry voice.
Khaled Al-Asad is a military commander in an unnamed Arab country in the Arabian Peninsula. He was featured in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare as the main villain in the first chapter, until Imran Zakhaev takes his place as the primary antagonist in two other chapters. As one of the so-called "Four Horsemen", Khaled Al-Asad is responsible for toppling President Yasir Al-Fulani, who is accused for supporting of Western countries for his self-interests. Al-Fulani is soon captured by Al-Asad's troops and transported in a car to the arena, where he is executed by Al-Asad himself on national television. Al-Asad assumes control of the country, but in the eyes of the United States, Al-Asad's rule in his nation threatens the whole political stability in the Middle-East. The US military sends United States Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance to Al-Asad's country and orders the unit to locate and capture the power-hungry commander. The Americans locate a television station where Al-Asad is broadcasting his speech on national television, but it turns out that the speech was recorded and Al-Asad has gone hiding into an unknown location.
The US military assumes that Al-Asad is hiding in the capital city and the attack force consisting of AH-1 Cobra helicopter gunships, CH-46 Sea Knight transport helicopters, M1 Abrams main battle tanks and hundreds of soldiers are dispatched to assault the city. Al-Asad is not found in the city, but the Americans locate a Russian-made nuclear warhead in his palace. The NEST teams are dispatched to disarm the weapon, but the warhead is detonated by Al-Asad's men, annihilating most of the invading US forces. Sergeant Paul Jackson and Lieutenant Vasquez are among the victims of the massive nuclear explosion that destroys the city. Nikolai, a Russian informant to the British Special Air Service, reveals that Al-Asad is hiding in his safehouse in Azerbaijan, protected by Russian Ultra-Nationalists. Captain Price, Gaz and John "Soap" MacTavish are dispatched to the village where Al-Asad is hiding, and soon Al-Asad is captured by the SAS. Cpt. Price ties Al-Asad in to a chair for questioning, but when the interrogation is over, Price kills Al-Asad by shooting him in the head with his pistol. After Al-Asad is dead, the British and Americans realize that the coup in the Middle-Eastern region was masterminded and funded by Al-Asad's ally, Russian ultra-nationalist leader Imran Zakhaev, who attempted to draw the attention of the United States from the Russian civil war, to ensure his victory over the loyalist force.
The name Al-Asad means "the lion" in the Arabic language. In an edition of GamePro, a preview on Call of Duty 4 erroneously names him 'Allisad'. Al-Asad is the name of a U.S base in Iraq, as featured in Andy McNab's Book; Bravo Two Zero. OpFor is a shortened term for "Opposing Force", a term used in war game scenarios for representing a hypothetical enemy. The OpFor originally had a different flag, as seen on the right. It looks like a turned Iraqi, Yemen, Syrian, or Egyptian flag with two swords in the white part. It might've been changed because of it's similarities with those flags.
Al-Assad's army uses primarily Russian-designed weapons such as the AK-47, AKS-74U and the RPG-7. However, they also use the German G3 assault rifle. They also use primarily Russian-designed vehicles such as the BMP-2, T-72 and Mi-24. It is likely that the Ultranationalists supplied them with this equipment. They only appear during the first act of the game, afterwards replaced with the Russian Ultranationalists.
